If it wasn’t because I couldn’t leave the house, I would have been long gone. The Crow’s Nest called my name and I needed one of Eugenie’s specialty drinks right about now. Instead, I was laid up in my room with the door locked, waiting for Elliott to return. I felt bad leaving Kit with Reed, but I couldn’t face him. Either of them.

I turned onto my stomach, stuffing my face in a pillow and screaming as loud as I could, taking comfort in the knowledge that the sound was mostly muffled by the pillow. I screamed until my lungs gave out. Raising my head, I gasped for air.

As the blood pounded in my ears, I heard the soft chime of my phone signaling a new text message. I reached into my back pocket for my phone and glanced at the screen, not surprised to see a message from Kit.

I’m heading back to Emilio’s. I’ll call you later.

I stuffed my face into the pillow and screamed another time for good measure. I would never be able to face him again.

After another hour of misery and hiding out in my room, there was a knock at my door. When Elliott called out, “It’s me,” I hurried to open the door.

“Sorry for locking the door,” I said sheepishly, standing back to give him room to step inside.

“It’s okay, I can understand why,” he said, and I didn’t correct him. He probably thought I was scared those mercenaries would return, when truthfully, I didn’t want to face either Kit or Reed. “I sent Reed home early to check on you, but I guess you’d already locked yourself in your room.”

I nodded innocently and looked away. “Did you report the attack to the Guild?”

“Yes, I did. We’ll be opening a full investigation, but I also scheduled an appointment for tonight with Darius Blackburn. I think it’s time we had a conversation,” Elliott said grimly. “Do I assume correctly that you will want to come with me?” he asked with a raised brow.

“Yes!” I exclaimed. “Don’t leave me out.”

“Can you control your emotions?”

“I’ll try,” I replied, though I was careful not to promise anything.

Elliott sighed. “That’s better than nothing, I guess.”

I grinned. “I’m glad you finally see it my way.”

Elliott ruffled my hair, messing it up. “Get some rest. You’re looking a little tired these days.”

He turned and left, and I closed the door behind him with a shaky sigh. As I was walking back to my bed, another knock came at my door. Before I could ask who it was, Reed opened the door and let himself inside.

“Hey!” I yelled. “I didn’t say you could come in!”

He shrugged, walked over to my bed, and laid down. “You finally unlocked your door; I had to take advantage of it. Were you nervous I’d barge in?” He raised a brow.

I grabbed a pillow and flung it at him, hitting his perfectly sculpted face. “I hate you.”

“The muggle left; you don’t have to worry,” he snorted. “I can’t believe he finally made a move,” he said partially under his breath.
